A to Z Challenge - Favourite Books - Susan Cooper

Greenwich, the third book of The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper.

"On the day of the dead, when the year too dies,
Must the youngest open the oldest hills
Through the door of the birds, where the breeze breaks.
There fire shall fly from the raven boy,
And the silver eyes that see the wind,
And the light shall have the harp of gold.

By the pleasant lake the Sleepers lie,
On Cadfan’s Way where the kestrels call;
Though grim from the Grey King shadows fall,
Yet singing the golden harp shall guide
To break their sleep and bid them ride.

When light from the lost land shall return,
Six Sleepers shall ride, six Signs shall burn,
And where the midsummer tree grows tall
By Pendragon’s sword the Dark shall fall.

Y maent yr mynyddoedd yn canu [the mountains are singing,
ac y mae’r arglwyddes yn dod [and the lady comes]."

I've visited Cornwall because of Greenwich, and went all the way to Aberdyfi, Wales, just to visit the places mentioned in the last two books of the series. I even saw King Arthur's horse's hoofprint in the place where he fought the afanc.

How far have you travelled because of a book?

That's a heck of a poem.

I haven't traveled that far, but L.G. Smith just got back from Wales doing her own research there, and her A-Z posts have all been about it.

Wow! That's one fine read, Deniz! Love the poem.

If it mentions Cornwall and Wales, it's my kind of book :) I'll have to check out the afanc info - I've not heard of that before

After reading Beautiful Maria of my Soul, I wanted to visit Cuba, but just can't seem to do it. It's actually easy from where I live now in Mexico.

I haven't been quite able to visit the places I'd like to visit, though I would love to visit New Zealand as that is where the LOTR series was captured on film.
I really want to go to Harry Potter world.

Hm... I can't say I've really travelled anywhere because of a book. I need to rectify that!

Sounds like you enjoyed your trip.
Deniz I have finally got around to reading your section of Yikici's Tapestry Challenge - it was really great and I must apologize for my lateness! You will find my reasons in the comment on that post!

Hope you are enjoying the A-Z Challenge.

That looks like a beautiful place. The Greenwitch poem was eerie and cool; I read a book based on her legend last year.

My desire to travel to Scotland was increased 100 fold thanks to the Outlander books. Hubby and I took a vacation tracing along the lines of the movie "Sideways". Fun trip! Even talked to one of the vineyard owners who appeared in the movie.

May have to add a few places to my vacation list from the books I've read. Love your choices Deniz. Have actually downloaded one of the so far. :)

Thanks for the tip, maine!

Isn't it lovely, Zan Marie?

You sound like me, Jamie :-)

I still want to visit Cuba, Em, all because of Hemingway.

Me too, Angela! New Zealand's definitely on my list.

Me too, Theresa! Michale's photos made me jealous!

Aww, thanks for making the effort to find my post C. M.!

It's an interesting legend, Tina!

Oh my yes, I'd love to see all the Outlander spots, Melanie! So far I've been to London and Edinburgh. Maybe Inverness next time?

But you live in London, Talli! That's where it all comes from :-)
Hi Deniz - interesting .. I don't think I've done that - visited places because of a book .. but you've intrigued me in the series.

Cheers Hilary

Definitely adding this to my TBR too :) I haven't travelled that far JUST 'cause of a book, but I've gone a fair way out of my way for a band ;)

I hope you like them, Hilary!

Ooh, I've chased bands, too, Trisha!
